Mother’s Union

Welcome to Mothers’ Union

logo

Mothers’ Union is an international Christian charity that seeks to support families worldwide.
In 84 countries, our members share one heartfelt vision – to bring about a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships. This is not a vague hope, but a goal we actively pursue through prayer, programmes, policy work and community relationships. By supporting marriage and family life, especially through times of adversity, we tackle the most urgent needs challenging relationships and communities.
Our members are not all mothers, or even all women. Single, married, parents, grandparents, or young adults just beginning to express their social conscience. For all 4 million members what Mothers’ Union provides is a network through which they can serve Christ in their own community – through prayer, financial support and actively working at the grassroots level in programmes that meet local needs. Mothers’ Union lobbies local and national governments on issues affecting family life and campaigns to challenge legislation that neglects the vulnerable and marginalised. It is also represented at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

ACTION AND OUTREACH REPORT-NEWS/UPDATE – 6TH DECEMBER 2014

Thank you for all the knitting you do. Knitting of prayer shawls and comfort teddies continues as does knitting for the neonatal unit at CUMH. We continue to look for ways in which we can reach out through this really important activity. Please keep up the great work. Knitted hats for the Simon Community would also be very welcome.

‘United in Prayer’ was the theme of the 2014 conference which was, by all reports, a wonderful weekend and was really appreciated by all who were able to be there. There was lots of very positive feedback. Next year’s Women’s Getaway will be on the weekend of 13th – 15th November at Garryvoe.

‘Curry in a Hurry’ cookbooks were distributed again at UCC on 6th September; other colleges and some schools also received copies for 6th year students as well. Most recently copies went to the Maritime College in Ringaskiddy.

The Prison Work continues. The new toys are a great help as are the comfort teddies. Being able to come alongside people with a listening ear and a cup of tea can be a big help to people visiting.

Thank you to all who helped – it was really appreciated – next year’s Cork Summer Show dates are Friday 19th – Sunday 21st June 2015

This year we were able to help approx. 20 people to have a much needed break through AFIA.

New leaflets – some for every branch, more available. Please use them to promote Mothers’ Union in your parish and elsewhere.

New Project for people who like to sew rather than knit – supporting ‘Days for Girls’ by sewing sanitary bags for girls who cannot afford to buy any protection and have to stay at home, missing school as a result. See more at www.daysforgirls.org

Working at home and abroad – keeping in touch with what is going on

Recently £70,000 was sent to Mary Sumner House – £65,000 for Overseas Development, and £5,000 for the Relief Fund. Earlier in the year £19,692.84 was forwarded on from our Mums in May Project, which we earmarked for Literacy in Sudan.

€1,000 was received by Diocesan MU from ‘Mums in May’ to buy toys to be used by the prison visitors at the visitor centre.

Approx. €15,000 in grants will be given to 18 Theological College Students from the Centenary Fund.

Thank you for all your generosity; please continue to fundraise for Mothers’ Union projects at home and abroad.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence takes place each year from 25th November to 10th December. Next year we plan to do something more visible to raise awareness, possibly a prayer vigil of some kind, along with other charities. More details later.

Please remember to pray for all our projects and those involved in outreach.

Prayer really makes a difference.

 October 2014

October was a busy month for Mothers’ Union – we enjoyed an evening in Crosshaven finding out more about what it is exactly that Mothers’ Union does in Cork. There is a lot being done quietly to help and support families; there are also diocesan projects such as providing holidays for people in need, parenting groups, knitting for the neonatal unit at the maternity hospital, helping at the prison visitor centre, giving out cook books to students to support them in their first year at college and more. Please spread the word about what a great organisation it is. There was also a Quiet Day in St. Senan’s in Inniscarra and a Getaway Day for younger women in Portlaoise along with our gathering for the Wave of Prayer. This month we will meet at the Church Hall in Carrigaline at 8pm on Wednesday, 19th November for ‘Christmassy’ Crafts and Chat. If you have something crafty you are doing please feel free to bring it along and show it to others. Look forward to welcoming you. This month also sees the beginning of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence – if you wish to find out more ask Hilary or check out www.mothersunion.org to see what you could do to highlight this issue. September 2014

Almost 40 of us gathered at the end of July to enjoy the beautiful gardens at the Old Deanery in Cloyne for our annual outing. The weather was beautiful; we were blessed with the day, and we thoroughly enjoyed the welcome we received and the delicious afternoon tea that was provided. We then went on to Shanagarry and Garryvoe and enjoyed a really good meal, accompanied by plenty of chat and fellowship, at the Garryvoe Hotel and some fresh air at the beach. We look forward now to meeting up again this month, on Wednesday, 17th September, when we will have our opening service of Holy Communion followed by our AGM and tea. We also hope to have cards, diaries, calendars etc for sale that evening. All this will be at St. Mary’s Church in Carrigaline, at 8 pm. We are excited about the work that Mothers’ Union is doing, both in our own dioceses and around the world, and hope to learn even more about it during the year along with finding ways to support that work. All are welcome to join us.

April 2014-

Our local Mothers’ Union has been having a quieter time during Lent to enable everyone to join in their own parish Lent activities; hopefully this has been a time of reflection and looking forward to Easter for us all. Some of us managed to get to the Festival Service in Clonakilty which was a wonderful evening which included the commissioning of new Diocesan Officers. Please pray for all who have responsibility in Mothers’ Union for wisdom and guidance in all they do. We thank everyone who contributed to the retiring collection for the ‘Make a Mother’s Day’ appeal at our Mothering Sunday service for their generosity; every euro makes a difference. Looking ahead – we usually meet on the third Wednesday of the month and look forward to meeting up again as a branch after a couple of months. We are really delighted that Alison Flack is opening her garden in Currabinny to us on Wednesday, the 21st May at 3.30pm. Please get in touch with Hilary or Jocelyn to let us know if you are coming, in order to give Alison numbers for the tea. Our outing will be towards the end of June – date still to be confirmed. Suggestions welcome!!  Watch this space in the June edition for more details.

2nd September 2013

Mothers’ Union News – We will have our opening service at 8pm on Wednesday, 18th September at St. Mary’s in Carrigaline, followed by a short AGM and a time of fellowship and tea. There will be a collection for the Mothers’ Union Relief Fund and there will be an opportunity to buy Christmas cards, other cards and calendars etc., the proceeds of which go towards Mothers’ Union work round the world. We would love to welcome new members and would like you to know that everyone of any age is welcome to join us, not just mothers!! Please also make a note of our annual Women’s Conference which takes place this year from 22nd-24th November in Garryvoe Hotel. It is always a relaxing, inspiring, fun weekend and really worth attending. Further information and booking forms are available from Hilary. If you need any further information please contact either the parish office or talk to Hilary Dring at 021-4378439/086-3680513

MU outing

Carrigaline group had their AGM on 28th August. Sincere thanks were conveyed to outgoing President Clare Poole and Hilary Dring was elected President 2012/13.

We finish up our year of activities today, the 19th June, with an outing which we hope everyone will enjoy; the weather is beautiful and we are heading to visit one of Cork’s most beautiful gardens, so it should be good. We look forward to a break over the summer and thank God for all the different activities we have been privileged to enjoy together as a branch during the year. We think of all those known to us who are going through difficult times and pray for them and their families. Prayer is so important and we are reminded of this in an article in the latest Families Worldwide entitled ‘Strengthened by the voice of God’ where there is mention of a Mothers’ Union member who regularly takes a risk by crossing over the border between two countries in conflict to bring funds for other members to finance their work. Whenever she is to undertake this dangerous journey she times it to coincide with it being midday prayers in the country of her link diocese. She knows that at that time people will be praying for her diocese and believes in the power of their prayers to keep her safe. I draw attention to this to remind us of the importance of praying for each other in our Mothers’ Union family. There are other really good articles as well as lots of information about what other branches around the world are doing in their communities. Please make use of this excellent resource and remember that others pray for us as well. We look forward to meeting again in September. Watch this space for information about activities in the autumn.
