Youth @ Carrigaline Union

Welcome to the Youth Page of Carrigaline Union. ¬† Here you’ll find info on what’s happening for young people.

What is Youth Group? Well, it’s a space where anyone in secondary school can come along and hang out. As well as somewhere to play a few games, it’s somewhere to chat, relax and share the ups and downs of life in a Christian setting. If you’re lucky, the leaders won’t start telling you how it was “when we were young…”! ūüėČ

The Youth Group meet from 7 – 9pm in the Parish Hall, each 3rd Friday night. ¬†We also aim at heading along to any CDYC events happening in the Diocese. For more info on events run by the Youth Council, go to http://cdyc.ballineen.com/There’s usually one or two cars heading from Carrigaline to CDYC events so try and get a spin with one of them if you can.¬†For more info, contact Peter at 086 3453361 or email the office at stmaryscarrigaline@eircom.net

Safeguarding Trust

It has been brought to our attention that there are many parishioners who may not be aware of Safeguarding Trust and it‚Äôs role in regard to the safety and well being of our children and young people within the Parish. Please check out the details on this website under the heading ‘Safeguarding Trust’ which¬†is the Church of Ireland’s code of good practice for ministry with children.

Youth News

¬†Friday June 19th :Alison Warren-Perry writes ‚ÄúIt was our youth club‚Äôs last meeting before breaking up for the summer holidays so a barbecue was held for the occasion.¬† Kristin Hollowell, the diocesan youth officer came and helped out for the night and organised all the games.¬† We were divided into 2 teams and competed in games involving water ¬†balloons, tea towels, blindfolds, coins and a brilliant variation of musical chairs!¬† Afterwards we indulged in burgers and sausages, followed by brownies.¬† We finished the night by each of us placing a candle around a wooden cross to represent our own prayers and in remembrance of the 6 Irish students who died in Berkeley.¬† Altogether the night was a great success and it was wonderful to see so many new faces.‚ÄĚ

Friday 10th РSunday 12th July-Peter Coughlan writes “The Cork Diocesan Youth Council held a very successful  activity weekend in a hostel on Cape Clear island and 24 young people from around the            diocese attended in the 13 to 15 age group. The weather was poor on the Saturday but it did not deter the group who eagerly got stuck in to the activities, Archery, Snorkelling, Kite flying, Hiking and other mad games !

Amy McCrea of the Church of Ireland Youth Council led a series of excellent short reflections on prayer and we held a Sunday morning service on the site of an old C of I church looking out over the bay – beautiful ! Tired but happy we returned by ferry to Baltimore on the Sunday evening. Well done to Oriel Hosford and Kyle Meiklejohn for representing our youth group so well.‚ÄĚ

Friday 20th February 2015

The Youth Club (still unnamed!) met in the Parish Hall and christened the new Table Tennis Table (Thanks CDYC!) it was brilliant. We also tried out the new mega Connect 4 and the Jenga. There were some great games involving sweets and straws and a lot of effort. Warming Hot Chocolate with marshmellows and cream finished off the night.

Friday 16th January 2015

The Youth Club met for the first of their scheduled ‘3rd Friday Nights’ in the Parish Hall. The plan is for us to think up a cool new name for our Club and to spread the word about the regular meeting times.

December 31st 2014

The Youth club travelled to Bandon to join up with the UCY youth group (Bandon Parish) and had a great night. The leaders arranged games, a quiz, videos, pizzas, snacks and more and over 20 young people really enjoyed themselves. Many thanks to Olivia, Jean, Jennifer, Amy and the other UCY leaders for their hospitality and to all of their club members for making us all so welcome‚Äď thank you also to Conor for his help with games and Brenda for being a designated driver for the night.

December 20th 2013

On Saturday December 14th, we joined the Ross and Bandon Parish youth clubs for a trip to ‘Cork on Ice’ followed by food n chat at Mahon Point.

It was a great event and thank you to Richard Anderson for inviting us and running the event and to Conor and Brenda for their help on the day.

Alanna Butler has kindly done a review for us below,

“Thank you for taking the youth group ice skating last Saturday. ¬†It was great fun.¬†I would totally go again ¬†and considering I was too¬†old for the peguins to help me¬†skate my BFF (Lynnie) was “my penguin” as¬†I clung onto her arm so I didn’t fall ,¬†luckily I didn’t . ¬†I¬†had so much fun thank you again for bringing us. ¬†It¬†was good¬†to meet and talk to the youth from Bandon and¬†Rosscarbery they seemed all so nice. ¬†thanks again Alanna :)”

October 1st 2013

We had our first 2013/2014 event last weekend – a Barbeque held in the rectory garden – we had lots of craic and¬†a great turnout (Including 5 young people from our neighbouring Templebreedy group of parishes). We had¬†some interesting chat about some of the recent challenging events in our lives such as starting secondary school or preparing for big exams and how God can support us in those challenges. We¬†managed to do ¬†serious damage to burgers, sausages and pizzas as well as delicious cakes dropped in by some of the Mum’s! Thank you to them and also to our leaders Conor, Brenda and Ivan for their enthusiastic help and sense of fun.

 July 1st 2013

Hi to all of our Youth Club members!

Our pizza making bash down at the Wilson’s place was our last meeting until we meet you all again in September. We’ve had some great meetings this past year – well done to you all for your contributions!!

The best of luck to those starting secondary school – we r sure u’ll love it. ¬†Please remember those less well off than yourselves (those sick or suffering or those living in places of poverty and war) and keep them in your prayers. Look after yourselves and have a great Summer ok !!? God Bless from Peter, Conor and Brenda

June 14 2013

Final Youth meeting of the 2012/13 year.

Eric and Evelyn Wilson kindly invited the Youth club to their home to avail of¬†their¬†“cool” stone pizza oven located in¬†their Currabinny¬†garden.

The oven had been heating up with a dry wood fire at the back of it for a few hours and was ready to go when we arrived.

Eric provided all the dough, tomato sauce and cheese. We brought a variety of toppings with us.

Eric started by teaching us how to shape and roll the bases, using semolina to stop them burning, then how to add the sauce and cheese and toppings and then to take them to the oven on the long handled implement to bake.

In less than 120 seconds each , our pizzas cooked through and they were DELICIOUS!!! (Simon was enjoying it so much he cooked a second pizza and his very own style of bread roll!)

We had a great night and thanks again to The Wilsons for their generosity.

June 2013

On Saturday June 1st the Youth club met bright and early at the church fete.

We had a great day and the young people all rolled up their sleeves to help.

They helped with the setting up, ran a very successful bottle stall / sweet shop as well as monitoring other competitions such as “guess the name of the bear” and “choose your premiership team of the season.”

More of the gang helped on the Toy stall, with the teas, did shifts supervising the bouncy castles and also got involved with Conor’s soccer and ultimate frisbee matches.

Well done youthclubbers … Great job!!! (PC)

May 2013

Youth News- The Youth club joined with members of the Mothers ¬†Union for the Monthly Saturday night ‘Sausage Service” at 7pm. We shared in the service together and learnt about Timothy and how his mother and grandmother and their Faith in God was very influential on him becoming such a loyal disciple. We also thought about the ‘generations ‘we represented in God’s church family and how St Paul challenged us of the slightly more mature variety (!) to protect the ‘deposit’ of the precious word of the Good News of Jesus Christ and share it with young people and nurture it in them.

We then had lovely food and refreshments in the church hall and when the adults left¬† the¬† Youth club had some crazy games and welcomed new members Lynn , Alice , Nicole , Lorna , Alison ¬†& Oriel ¬†to the group. We followed this up by starting our¬† ‘Movie Night’ as suggested by the young people at our previous meeting. We got the popcorn, pizzas n chewy sweets ready and watched a Pixar animated DVD called “Despicable Me”. It was a great night and thank you to Brenda and her friends who assisted us so well in the kitchen. Our next event will be on Saturday June 1st when Conor will organise a series of Frisbee matches as part of fundraising at the church fete taking place at the same time.(PC)

April 2013

Youth Club met after¬†Rev Elaine’s “sausage service” ¬†on Saturday night (April 14th). Once we had taken some time out to reflect n recharge in church- we enjoyed hot dogs n chat. We followed this with some mad games which included intensive balloon bursting and blindfolded attacks on some very well built indoor forts !!¬† The young people participated in their usual energetic and enthusiastic way and a good nite was had by all. Thank you to all who provided the yummy supper and to Conor Murray for all his help.

March 2013

The Youth Club met on Friday night 23rd Feb and we were delighted some young people from Templebreedy could join us.

We had a great night – Plenty of mad games interspersed with some interesting discussion on the importance and relevance of Lent – recognising Jesus’ time of fasting and preparation in the desert plus some other topics.

You should be proud of these young people Рthey are  are well able to think topics through and present and justify their points of view РI was impressed and learnt a lot myself !

We followed that up by doing some serious damage to some large pizzas and Rev Elaine closed for us with prayer.

The youth leaders would like to say Well done to the gang who supported the 6th annual Diocesan Youth Table Quiz in Douglas on March 9th, the Carrigaline team were runners up on the night which was a great performance!

Thanks a million to Lisa Tracey and the other helpers for putting this very popular event together.

November 2012

Our 6th Annual Tournament was a great success with almost 50 teenagers in 8 teams from youth clubs around the diocese attending the event and by all accounts, enjoying themselves!!.

As well as 4 hours of intense football matches played in a great spirit, the young people also had the use of a great games room (Xbox, Fusball, giant Jenga and many other games) while waiting for their next match. Also a tuck shop was available. Many players just used the time between games to catch up with their friends and just chill and chat.

After all the matches were completed we made short work of a big delivery of pizzas !

We then presented the prizes

Junior Winners ‚Äď Carrigrohane. Runners up- Carrigaline/Crosshaven

Senior Winners – Midleton. Runners up- Ross

Special Prize for most positive and enthiusiastic team of the tournament! ‚Äď Skibbereen

After a prayer of thanks for a really enjoyable day, we headed for home.

Many Thanks to all those who gave up their Saturday to help us with Transport, Registration and Admin, Tuck shop, First Aid, Games and games room, Refereeing and general supervision, we really appreciate it.

October 2012

We held our second meeting of our  youth club with a visit from the youth club in Bandon on Friday 19th                 October 2012. Attendance was doubled with the visit of the Bandon Youth club and their 3 leaders Olivia,Amy and Jean. We were also joined by Leah and Paul from Crosshaven (Templebreedy). It was a really great evening -full of infectious energy mad games, music quizzes and laughs. (Great singing skills Jessica  !!!) The 2 groups of teenagers got on very well together and we ended the evening with some pizzas and soft drinks and then we closed in a prayer of thanks to God for all the fun and for the safe travel home of our visitors. Our next meeting will be after the First Saturday night Service in St Marys on Nov 10th.
