Parish Notices Sunday 11th March 2018
The Revd Tony Murphy writes ’The year 2018 has been designated by the Irish Government as “Bliain na Gaeilge” (The Year of Irish) to mark the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the Gaelic League by Douglas Hyde, a member of the Church of Ireland. 22 years after its foundation the League (and the language) suffered a damaging split between those who had a cultural interest in the language and others who associated it with a political agenda. Fortunately in recent years there has once again been a revival of interest in the Irish Language as a cultural and heritage item embracing diverse groupings throughout the country. For the past 6 years Carrigaline Union has been kind enough to include a bilingual service of Holy Communion in St Mary’s Church on the Eve of St Patrick’s Day. While the celebration is in the Irish Language, our objective has always been to make the service inclusive by offering translations of the prayers, the hymns and the readings. We are delighted once again that our Monkstown Chamber Choir will be with us. The address will be given by Kathleen Mc Garvey who is the head of the Missionary Order (OLA’s) in Ireland. Kathleen has extensive experience in Africa and involvement in Christian Muslim relations here in Ireland. The Celebrant will be the Revd Hazel Minion and we will be joined by Clergy and Parishioners from a number of Parishes, offering a diocesan wide input into our celebrations’
