Parish Notices Sunday 11th November 2012

The Rector writes- “Today is Remembrance Sunday when we traditionally remember those who died in wartime. This tradition. a strong one in our Church of Ireland communities, stems from the fact that on 11th November 1918, ‘at 11am on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month’, the First World War came to an end. This war and the huge amounts of casualties suffered stunned Europe (It is now reckoned that perhaps as many as 9 million soldiers died with about 27 million wounded). At the time, it seemed like the treasured ideal that Civilisation was steadily progressing had also died at the same time. An innocence was lost – no longer did people feel that their tomorrows would necessarily be better than their todays. No longer did anyone believe that improving technology would guarantee a better world. The war to come (1939-1945) was to show how technological advances could be used for pure evil. In Ireland, November is a month where we remember with respect and gratitude those who have gone before us and in remembering those who died for their countries in war,  we especially pray that all humanity will learn the lesson of the importance of peace.”
