Parish Notices Sunday 23rd September 2018
The Rector writes ’As you know we already have 3 bags at the back of our churches for Cork Simon Community, Penny Dinners & Women’s Refuge. When the bags are full I drop them into the charities. Many of you find this a useful way to get practical help to those who need it the most. Last week I visited the Direct Provision Centre on the Kinsale Road as I had 4 Sewing Machines for them.
I also brought them some new School Shirts ,Socks & Stationary (and thanks to some of the Wednesday HC gang for funding this). Asylum-seekers and their children have spent years living in these institutional settings that were really only designed to be a short-term solution and most find the going very tough, especially those with school going children as it is so expensive to kit them out. In the coming weeks, I plan to set up a 4th bag at the back of the churches for the DP Centre. I have asked my contact there to let me know exactly the sort of things they need.’

Since today is the Animal Blessing service let’s see what various writers had to say about our four-legged friends.
Pam Ayres. “Ode to a Jack Russell.”
“Oh why must you bark at the postman?
Why must you batter my ears?
Don’t you know that very same postman
Has come here daily for twenty-five years?”
Rudyard Kipling. “The power of the dog.”
“There is sorrow enough in the natural way
from men and women to fill our day,
And when we are certain of sorrow in store
why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
of giving you heart to a dog to tear.”
“Buy a pup and your money will buy
love unflinching that cannot lie.
Perfect passion and worship fed
by a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
to risk your heart for a dog to tear. “
Ogden Nash. “The Cow”.
“The cow is of the bovine ilk.
One end is moo and the other is milk.”
