The Rector writes ‘Compassion is often understood to be ‘pity’ but in reality, compassion is the ability to endure along with someone else, to be able to put ourselves in their shoes, to feel their pain as if it were our own. Compassion is summed up in the words of Jesus when he asked us ‘to love one another as I have loved you’ (John 15:12). I am writing these words on the day the Budget is to be announced. We need to be aware of each other’s need in these difficult times. Some people are suffering very badly at the moment and we need to be alert to their distress. St Theresa of Avila wrote the following prayer in the 16th century which reminds us that we are the eyes, hands and feet of Jesus – for if we don’t help others in his name, then who will?’
No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.’
