Pew Sheet – 14th April 2024

The Rector writes  ‘ We would really love to complete the Wall Exhibition in the Parish Hall with similar type pictures of St John’s Church as we already have of St Mary’s Church.

So if you have any lovely photos of St John’s Church, interior or exterior , then please email them to either

The Parish Hall may be situated beside St Mary’s church in Carrigaline but it is called the ‘’Parish Hall’ for good reason! It is the entire Parish’s facility.  So it would be good to fill the rest of the available wall space with photos of St John’s church.

Do have a look and see if you already have any nice photos and email to the lads.

Or if you are a budding photographer (and we have plenty of them!) please wander across to Monkstown and take some photos.

I look forward to seeing all our churches emblazoned on the walls of our Hall.’

Random Notes CDLIV

The following reference to the recently installed reredos in St, Mary’s Church may perhaps be of some interest to readers of these notes.

On the afternoon of Monday, 8th April, 2024, during a visit to Ballineen, near to where stands the Church of St. Paul, built 1846-1849 to designs of Joseph Welland,  and now rapidly slipping into an ever increasing state of dereliction and decay, the Church in which the reredos recently installed in Carrigaline formerly was, the compiler of this note was given access to the relevant Vestry minute book.  The earliest entry in the book, and thus dating from the time of the previous building, is dated  ‘at 12 o’clock on Monday, the 12th of April 1830 being Easter Monday’, and from it the following most interesting extract relating to the reredos is extracted, and here transcribed verbatim:

1902,  ‘A meeting of the Select Vestry of Ballymoney Parish was held on Thursday, 14th August at 4 0’clock- Present Rev A.C. Robinson (in the chair) messrs, J, Unkles, P. Cotter, J. Garvey, and H. Shorten.
After prayers the minutes  of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The design of the oak panelling proposed to be erected in Ballymoney Church which had been adopted at a meeting of the subscribers to the Singer memorial was submitted and the following resolution proposed by Mr P. Cotter and seconded by Mr J, Unkles was passed unanimously  ”that the Select Vestry hereby approve of the design submitted to them for oak panelling proposed to be erected in the Church of Ballymoney Church as a memorial to the late Rev Paulus Æmelius Singer”

The two rather dreary photographs of the Church were taken in the rain on the day of the visit!
