Illustrated herewith is a photograph of an oaken panel. measuring some fourteen inches wide by thirty-three in height, which originally formed a part of the reredos in the by now, for many years abandoned and semi-ruinous Church of St. Paul, Ballymoney, Ballineen, co. Cork. The reredos was removed from the Church on the morning of Friday, 6th May, 2022, and over the following months , carefully cleaned, repaired where necessary, and installed in St. Mary’s Church, Carrigaline.
On the evening of Wednesday, 7th February, 2024, at a service to mark the bi-centenary of the Church being licensed for Divine Service, the reredos was by the Most Revd John Mc Dowell, Archbishop of Armagh, once again re-dedicated, some one hundred and twenty-two. years after having first been so in 1902. The panel is deeply incised with an inscription as recorded beneath, and of its installation of the reredos in St. Paul’s, the following is recorded in the Revd J. H. Cole’s ‘Church and Parish Records of the United Diocese of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross;. Cork, 1903:
‘On the 26th of November, 1902, a service was held in Ballymoney Church, at which the Lord Bishop dedicated a beautiful piece of panelling of carved oak, on the east end of the chancel, having on one panel this inscription- “To the glory of God, and in loving memory of the generous benefactor who endowed this parish, the Rev, Paulus AEmilius Singer, Rector of Ballymoney, 1867 t0 1871, died 24th October,1901, this panelling is erected by grateful Parishioners and friends, 1902” The Revd. Paulus AEmilius Singer was born on Friday, 12th October, 1832, the son of the Most Revd. Joseph Henderson Singer (1786-1866 ), Bishop of Meath, 1852-1866. He was ordained Deacon at Tuam, for Meath, in 1855, and in 1857, Priest at Chester; appointed Curate of St Alban’s, Tattenhall, Cheshire, 1855-1857; Chaplain to his father, the Bishop of Meath, 1857-1866; Rector of St, Mary’s, Stackallen, co.
