Pew Sheet – 22nd February 2026

The Rector writes  ‘The annual revision of the Register of Vestry Members will take place at 7:30pm, Monday 23rd February at 7:30pm in the Parish Hall. If you are over 18 and not already on the list  you can fill in a form and you can be added to the register.

The Church Wardens have these forms and can check whether you are on the General Vestry already.  It is important to be on the list as while anyone can attend the Easter Vestry

(on 16th April), only those on the actual Register can be voted onto the Select Vestry and even more importantly can they themselves VOTE!  This year is what’s called a ‘Triennial year’ which means that the  five ‘Diocesan Synod Members’ and the four ‘Nominators’ will also be chosen for the three year term.

As I’m retiring at the end of August, these Nominators will have the very important job of finding your next Rector! So if you’re not on this register, get cracking and then you can have a say in April on who will pick my replacement in September!

Don’t say you weren’t warned!. If you would like to be sent a form online, just email me and I’ll send you one.’

During the first three days of Holy Week this year, there will be a display of Crosses and Crucifixes in the Parish Hall.

The Rector probably has enough to fill the hall by herself (!) but the idea suggested by a parishioner is that if you have a beloved Cross or Crucifix, or one that might be very special to you, you might like to lend it to the display for Holy Week?  Perhaps with a little note about where it was bought or what it means to you?   It’s very much like what we did with the Nativity Cribs a couple of years ago during Christmas time …

The Display will be open for viewing from 10am to 12noon and from 2pm to 4pm on Monday 30th March, Tuesday 31st March and Wednesday 1st April.

I’m sure it will be interesting but at the same time it will remind us of how the Cross can be a powerful symbol of our faith.

Random Notes DXIX

I recently acquired a cute little book called “Don’ts for Choirmasters” by John Newton, first published in 1924.

Although very much of it’s time, some of the pieces of advice are amusing and interesting….

· Don’t instruct your choir to kneel for private prayer when reaching the choir stalls. Their prayer before worship is said in the vestry,

· Don’t overlook the mispronunciation of ordinary    words  –

    Be-lieve      not ber-lieve

    King-dom    not king=am

· Don’t forget the power of silence. The other day a priest preached a forty minute sermon on the power of silence!

· Don’t be untidy. After service let each chorister carry out his own copy. Spent lists should not be left in the stalls.

· Don’t allow carol singing in the streets by your boys, it is very undignified, and frequently irreverent.

I dont know what John Newton would make of our Church music in 2026…..??!!
