The Rector writes ‘ It is customary that when a new bishop is elected for our diocese, the parishes donate funds towards the purchase of a pectoral cross. To this end, we will have retiring collection baskets in both churches today if you would like to donate something. If you would rather send the money directly to the parish, please let the treasurer know that the money is specifically for the pectoral cross collection so it doesn’t get mixed up with general parish funds.
For those of you that don’t know what a pectoral cross is, it is the cross that the bishop wears around the neck, usually a relatively large cross worn on the chest (from the Latin pectoralis, meaning “of the chest”). The clergy of the diocese donate separately towards the new bishop’s episcopal ring, which is a primary symbol of their office, authority, and spiritual marriage to the Church so between us all, we have it well covered!

will take place at 2:30pm on Tuesday 29th September, St Michael &
All Angels. Invitations will be issued shortly.

Random Notes DXXXVII
Very many miles from anywhere at more or less in the centre of the south Pacific, and approximately twelve hundred miles to the west of Easter Island, lie a small group of volcanic islands, the Pitcairns, comprising the four islands of Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno, of which but the eponymous is inhabited.
Primarily known on account of having been the refuge of the mutineers of the H.M.S. Bounty, who after seizing control of the ship on Tuesday 28th April, 1789, and casting the captain, William Bligh, together with eighteen of his comrades adrift in an open boat, set sail for the island of Tahiti. After a stay of some months on Tahiti, twenty of the Polynesian islanders were taken on board, and the Bounty departed, arriving at the then not uninhabited and unknown actual location of Pitcairn on Friday, 15th January, 1790.
After unloading all that was useful, the ship was set alight in order to avoid detection, and so began the population on the island, the remnants of which today number but 35 (as of 2023), a rather sharp decline from that recorded in 1936 as being 250.
The vase here illustrated, presently at Mount Rivers, is a ‘hand vases’, carved on Pitcairn from a single piece of hardwood for sale as souvenirs to visitors from passing ships, and probably dates from in or around the mid. twentieth century.
Also illustrated is a c.1895 map of the Pacific (Pitcairn being more or less directly above the ‘F’ of the word Pacific),;
a 3d stamp, first issued in 1940 (also showing the island’s location), cancelled there 9th November, 1951,
and an envelope with three of the first stamps of Pitcairn cancelled there on the first day of issue.
