Parish Pewsheet – 14th June 2026

The Rector writes ‘ Next Sunday, 21st June, as well as being ‘Father’s Day’, is also  ‘Sanctuary Sunday’. This day is marked each year at the end of Refugee Week and aims to promote the Church of Sanctuary programme, which is to build cultures of welcome, hospitality and safety in our churches. As you know, we are a ‘Church of Sanctuary’ for a few years now. This year I’m delighted that Rowland Newenham, a member of the Sanctuary Team in the parish  (AND a Father!) will be speaking to us at both services.

I look forward to hearing what he has to say as he has been involved in many initiatives in this area; he is part of UCC’s Failte Cork group who sponsored Kanku our speaker last year, to come to study in Cork and Rowand is also involved with the BRIJ group who organized for groups from Direct Provision to come and use our Hall facilities , as well of course as the Carrigaline Ecumenical Project Team (CEPT) who welcomed a Refugee family from Syria back in 2021 and who are hosting the Documentary ‘Who Would Jesus Bomb’ screening on 23rd June in our Parish Hall. See the Poster inside this pewsheet for more details .’

Random Notes DXXXII

As many of us enjoy having a chat in the lovely gardens outside St John’s Church, Monkstown during the summer months, below is an extract from Colman O’Mahony’s book “Mansions and Monuments”. It includes an article from the Cork Constitution newspaper.

On 20th June 1914, Miss Everett married Staff-Surgeon W. Percival Walker, RN, of HMS Crescent at a ceremony in St John’s Church, Monkstown. We are told that “The bride, who was given away by her father, looked very handsome in an exquisite white satin gown with Brussels lace, the latter the gift of her aunt, Miss Everett, and carried a bouquet of lilies and maiden hair fern. She was attended by two bride-maids, Miss Violet Ronayne and Miss Marjory Foott, who both looked charming in embroidered crepe de chine frocks, and had bouquets of white sweet pea and gold watch bracelets, the gift of the bridegroom. The best man Lieutenant Nield, HMS Theseus, proved himself a capable master of ceremonies, as well as a genial and cheery presence at the social function. Both he and the bridegroom wore full naval uniform. The bride’s mother wore cream satin, draped with black lace, and black hat, while the bridegroom’s mother wore a grey satin gown.

After the ceremony a reception was held at St Aubyn’s. A marquee, gaily decorated with bunting, had been erected in front of the residence. where refreshments were served.

The happy pair departed by motor for Glengariff where their yacht was to meet them.
