Refugees                                by Brian Bilston

They have no need of our help

So do not tell me

These haggard faces could belong to you or I

Should life have dealt a different hand

We need to see them for who they really are

Chancers and scroungers

Layabouts and loungers

With bombs up their sleeves

Cut-throats and thieves

They are not

Welcome here

We should make them

Go back to where they came from

They cannot

Share our food

Share our homes

Share our countries

Instead let us

Build a wall to keep them out

It is not okay to say

These are people just like us

A place should only belong to those who are born there

Do not be so stupid to think that

The world can be looked at another way

Dogged with misfortune.

In September 1987 on the openein day of the duck hunting season, Michael Martin, 24, a would be duck hunter, pulled his boat into the bank of Lough Ree. Just then, however, his dog, Lindy, stepped on the trigger of his shotgun and shot him in the leg.

Corsican cover up.

In June 1994, an Irishman who tried baring all on a Corsican beach ended up in a sticky situation when he was pounced on by two burly locals, who covered him in bright red paint from head to toe.

The ex-files.

Penelope Smith of Co. Cork obviously enjoyed weddings. She was so proud of having bagged an Italian prince as her husband that she married him four times in 1835. At one ceremony 13 of the guests were her rejected suitors.

How to fatten your woodworm.

In the early 1980s, researchers at Trinity College wanted to do some work that needed woodworms—plump ones.

The available ones were too thin, so Dr Sean Thompson, the team leader, fed them on dog biscuits.  Within a month, they had grown to 20 times the size of an average woodworm.
