Parish Notices Sunday 18th May 2014

The Rector writes: ‘ I attended the General Synod of the Church of Ireland which took place in Dublin from 8th to 10th May.  As our Bishop ‘tweeted’  it is ‘the annual 3-day ‘parliament’ of the Church of Ireland; bishops, clergy and laity together’  Much business was discussed but perhaps the most important and historic part of this Synod of 2014 was the passing of the Bill providing for the interchangeability of ministry between the Church of Ireland and the Methodist Church in Ireland,. This represents a huge step in bringing the hopes of the Covenant into being, deepening our communion, and our sharing a common life and mission.  A real step forward in our Christian Life together and I look forward in the coming months to witnessing the fruits of this brave ecumenical initiative.’

Carrigaline rectory, c.1911 001

Presently preserved at Mount Rivers is a rather interesting photograph, in the form of a postcard, published by ‘Crooks, Wigan’, Lancashire, illustrated above.

The photograph was taken outside the old Rectory at Carrigaline, c.1911, and is of the Revd. John Quarry Conolly (1876-1948), Rector of Carrigaline, 1909-1921, together with his wife, (married in 1910), Alice (b.1880), daughter of Francis William Woodley, D.L., J.P., of Leades, nr. Aghinagh, Co. Cork, and seated on his nurse’s knee, their only son (they were later also to have a daughter), John Francis Quarry Conolly (b.1910), who later inherited and lived at Leades. The name of the maid standing to the left, outside the window of the study, was ‘Lizzie’ Doyle.
