Parish Notices Sunday 13th January 2013
The Rector writes ‘Next week is the beginning of the annual week of Christian Unity, where our various denominational branches of the Church of Christ try to visibly demonstrate the unity that Jesus called for when he said to his Father in heaven ‘The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me’ (John 17:22-23).
Next Saturday 19th I will be preaching at the 7pm Mass in our sister Church in Carrigaline and Tony will be preaching at the 6pm Mass in our sister Church in Monkstown. Then the following day, Sunday 20th, we will welcome Fr Sean O’Sullivan pp to preach at the 9.30am Service in St John’s Church Monkstown and Canon Bertie O’Mahoney pp to preach at the 11am Service in St Mary’s Church Carrigaline. Please feel free to come and join myself or Tony on the Saturday night in addition to being present at our usual Sunday Morning Services as it will perhaps be interesting to hear the different sermons preached based on our common lectionary.’

SUNDAY SCHOOL From January 2013, as well as welcoming children from age 4 in Sunday School, we also encourage children from age 3 to join with the older children as long as one of the parents can accompany them. In this way, they will get used to Sunday School in an informal way and be completely ready to go ‘solo’ from age 4. Thank you to the dedicated Sunday School teachers for all the effort they put into helping our children learn about God. It is very much appreciated by us all.

Random Notes No. XXXXIV
Further to Random Notes no. XXXXIII, wherein the monument to the Revd. John Johnson (1809-1837) was partially illustrated and transcribed, readers of these notes (all three of you, that is!) may find the accompanying illustrations to be of some interest.
The photograph below is of the tomb, in the Churchyard at Carrigaline, (a little to the south of the Church), of the Revd. John Johnson, which has cut upon it an inscription as follows:
‘Beneath this Stone are / deposited the earthly remains / of the Rev. John Johnson / for 7 years / the beloved curate of this / Parish / Aged 37 years / “He being dead yet speaketh”.’
The illustration is photographed from an entry, dated Wednesday, 15th May, 1833,in the minute book of the Select Vestry of Carrigaline, showing at the top the signature, ‘John Johnson, Clk’ [Clerk, in Holy Orders], a form frequently used, the other being ‘John Johnson, Curate’.
