Parishioners and visitors to Carrigaline Church will no doubt be well aware of a small elegant obelisk that stands by the ancient boundary wall at the western side of the Churchyard, and which in more recent times, in the pursuit of pleasing a lawn mower, rather regrettably lost the iron railings which formerly and elegantly had surrounded it.
In front of the obelisk lie four similar stone slabs bearing inscriptions as hereunder transcribed. The inscriptions tell all about the ghastly occurrence, and little more need not here be added.
‘In Memory of Adelaide Atkins, accidentally drowned by the upsetting of a boat on the River Lee, Aug. 27, 1881, Aged 14’
‘In Memory of Benjamin Robert Atkins of Evergreen House, Cork, accidentally drowned by the upsetting of a boat on the River Lee, Aug. 27, 1881, Aged 17’
‘In Memory of Kathleen Atkins, accidentally drowned by the upsetting of a boat on the River Lee, Aug. 27, 1881, Aged 16’
‘In Memory of Thomas Atkins, 1, South Terrace, Cork, accidentally drowned by the upsetting of a boat on the River Lee, Aug. 27, 1881, Aged 49’
In the Vestry minute book, the following is written.
1881, ‘Aug. 30. A special meeting of the Select Vestry was held this day after the Burial of the bodies of the lamented Thos., Benjamin, Kathleen & Adelaide Atkins, and the following resolutions were carried unanimously
1 That this meeting desires to express its sympathy with Mrs. Thos. Atkins and her bereaved family in this, their sad affliction
2 That no fees shall be charged for the ground now added to the Atkins family burial place
3 That as six pounds, or one half years salary (in his capacity as organist of Carrigaline Church), was due to the late lamented Thos. Atkins on the day of his death, the Treasurer be instructed to forward a cheque for £12 to Mrs. Atkins.
