Parish Notices Sunday 8th February 2015
The Rector writes ….. ‘The Friendship Club, which meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month is simply that, a Friendship Club. We meet in the Rectory, have coffee/tea and chat.
The special aspect of this gathering is that anyone who wants to come along and can’t currently drive themselves will be picked up and brought to the Rectory by someone else who has a car. So please ring me if you would like to come to this morning get-together and aren’t able to get there without help and I will ask someone who lives near you to pick you up and drop you home. We are meeting in the Rectory this coming Thursday 12th at 11am. See you there’

“Summerland”, Monkstown, Co Cork was bought by the Fleury family in 1957. Prior to that, it was the Rectory serving St John’s Church. Mr & Mrs Fleury bought it from the Church authorities when Canon Bourchier retired, and lived there for 20 years before Eddie & Sheila Fleury moved in, in 1977. The two storey over basement house, built c. 1840 has recently changed hands to another local family and is being extensively and sensitively restored.
I was in school with Alan Fleury and as a child, I spent many happy hours playing in the house and gardens. The basement fascinated me as all the rooms were still in tact…the old kitchen with stove and endless cupboards, the sleeping quarters for staff and other rooms not used for years. There was a well built in to the wall behind the back door to the basement. Also, the dumb waiter which brought food from the basement kitchen up to the dining room was still in place. This marvellous and practical invention meant that dinner could be brought up to the dining room by means of a tray on pullies – No need to lug it up the stairs!
Whilst forming a part of our history and heritage, it is wonderful to see these Victorian houses given a new lease of life.”
