Pew Sheet – 15th September 2024
A message from our Youth Group Leader, Oriel Hosford
‘As the excitement of beginning the new school year is starting to wear off, I am sure the youth are looking for an excuse to meet up and chat with their friends. Maybe that is all year round though. Even so why not come along to our youth group evenings?
Give us the ideas and we will put them into action. Have your say just like the four amazing youth that have helped us plan out this years exciting events. We will be beginning the youth group year on the 14th of September 2024 at 7:30pm-9pm in the Parish Hall with an induction and games night. The perfect chance to catch up without teachers catching you out for talking at the back of the class. And for those reading this who wish they were 12-17 years old again, if you know of any youth that would be interested in youth group send them along and I promise they won’t regret it. Between the Focus Ireland Sleepout in October and other events such as Bowling and Go Karting in the plans they will be dying for more. For more information; please contact Oriel Hosford on 087 3412445’

You will shortly see this label stuck on our church pews so I thought I’d first explain a little about it.
This ‘QR’ or ‘Quick Response’ code will allow you to directly connect with our parish iDonate page.
Most of you have seen these QR codes which are quite common everywhere now. The most recognizable feature of a QR code is its grid of black squares arranged on a white background. These squares encode data using binary code, which is readable by devices like smartphones or specialized scanners.
You just point your phone camera directly on the ‘Black Squiggly’ bit which is, as I said, a coded short cut to our parish iDonate page, and then click on the link that comes up. After that, just follow the easy instructions.
It seemed initially strange to me to have this type of technology in our places of worship but nowadays a lot of people don’t have cash on them and many have asked us to provide different ways of giving, like the Card Reader and now the QR codes.
We are trying to provide new ways of giving as unfortunately the Parish is finding things quite tight financially at the minute (our Hon. Treasurer Helen Arnopp will be writing more about that in next week’s Pewsheet so brace yourselves!)
Thank you all for your ongoing support! Elaine

Random Notes CDLXVIII
On 17th May 2016, a dedication festival took place at St Lappan’s, Little Island to mark the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the church.
The extract below is taken from the booklet produced for the occasion:-
The Church of St. Lappan’s 1866 – 2016
The first church and parish on Little Island date back many hundreds of years. That church is first mentioned in the “Taxation pf Pope Innocent III” (1199) as “Cill-Easpig-Lappan” – the church of Bishop Lappan.
The original church erected for Lappan, long since in ruins, was at Wallingstown, now an industrial area further along the road to the east of the present church. That church was mentioned in a Visitation of his Diocese by Bishop Dive Downe over 200 years ago. He records, ” In October 1700, I saw the church in Little Island. It was built in stone and lime. There is a pulpit and desk but no seats.”
In 1785, the parish of St. Lappan’s was united to the parish of Rathcooney (Glanmire) where it remained for many years. In Rev’d J H Coles’s “Records” of 1903, it is noted that
“St Lappan’s Church is at present served by the curate C F Ince, MA”
The site for the present church by Little Island was donated to the church authorities by Mrs Elizabeth Bury, widow of the Rev’d Phineas Bury. Building took place during the period 1864-1866 and was dedicated on 17th May 1866 by the Rt. Reverend Dr John Gregg, then Bishop of Cork, Cloyne & Ross.
In 1995, the parish of Rathcooney was united with the parish of Clonmel (Great Island) and now forms a part of the parish of Cobh & Glanmire Union.
