Random Notes DXXVIX
Many of us will recall attending a play or musical in the Haulbowline Theatre. It was such a treat to travel over on the Naval tender, watch a show then have a sneaky cheap pint in the bar. Unfortunately, that theatre closed its doors a few years ago.
However, the actors and spirit of Cobh could not be extinguished easily. The people of Great Island formed the Great Island Theatre in 2025. Furthermore, they have acquired a building to house their new theatre in the centre of Cobh. The building is the former Parochial Hall of St Mary’s Church of Ireland – beside St Colman’s Cathedral. Although the church was demolished in the late 1960’s, the former parochial hall remains and has many uses over the last few years.
The new theatre will have 100 seats, reception area, 2 dressing rooms. A mezzanine will accommodate the sound, lighting and technical areas. Parking will be available in the large Cathedral carpark.
This is all wonderful news for the harbour town of Cobh, which doesn’t even have a cinema. It is envisaged that the new Great Island Theatre will host all sorts of concerts, plays, musicals and other artistic events.
Their website is www.greatislandtheatre.ie if you would like to see the progress on the building and up-coming events.
Fair play and good luck to all involved.
