Pew Sheet – 26th April 2026
The Rector writes ‘ Today we will have a special commissioning prayer for all those voted into office as Select Vestry, Diocesan Synod or Parochial Nominators on 16th April. You will find the list of names and the prayer we will use within this Pewsheet. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those who are willing to serve the parish in this capacity.
Next week, as part of the Cork Choral Festival, a 32 strong Male Voice Choir from Portadown will be singing at the 11am Service and there will be refreshments afterwards. If you would like to bake a cake or do up a plate of sandwiches, they can be dropped into the Parish Hall on Sunday morning before the service. I’d imagine a Male Voice Choir would be fairly starving after singing!
Prayer of commissioning
for those voted into office at the Easter Vestry gathering held on Thursday 16th April 2026.
Almighty God
you have set your church in the world
to bear witness to the Gospel.
We thank you that you call
women and men in every generation
to offer their lives and their talents for the fulfillment of your purpose.
Accept these your servants whom you have called to office in this Union of parishes.
Give them grace to do the work committed to them
and vision to lead your people in their witness to the world.
Make them constant in service and wise in counsel , grounded in the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, that through them your will may be done and your name may be glorified
We ask this in the name of our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. AMEN

Random Notes DXXIV
Illustrated herewith are both the obverse and reverse of a most attractive ten shillings coin, first put into circulation some sixty years ago on Tuesday, 12th April, 1966.
Struck in an alloy of 83% silver, and copper, the coin was issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916, and was the first commemorative coin issued by Ireland, and unusually so, was without the traditional national emblem of a harp.
The coin was designed by the well known designer, Thomas Humphrey Paget (1893-1974), and bears on the obverse an image of Padraig Pearse (1879-1916), one of the leaders of the 1916 rising, executed for his part in it, at 3.30 in the morning of Wednesday, 3rd May, 1916, The reverse carries a
representation of the statue by Oliver Sheppard (1865-1941) of the dying Cu Chulainn, symbolising heroic sacrifice, which statue today is housed in the concourse of the G.P.O., Dublin, and around the edge are inscribed the words ‘Eiri Amac na Casca 1916’ (Easter Rising, 1916).
2,000,000 of the coins were minted, but due to its having failed to be much appreciated by the public, was as a consequence but little used. The result was that of the original mintage, approximately 1,270,000 were subsequently melted down for scrap.
