Pew Sheet – 27th November 2022
The Rector writes ‘ As teacher’s diaries begin in September instead of January, Clergy diaries begin today, Advent Sunday! I suppose you could say that today is the Church’s New Year’s Day! It’s when we begin again to tell THE story of our faith.
During this season of Advent, we wait in longing expectation of the coming of the Light of the World and all of our readings and music is geared towards this. Today I will do something a little different in my sermon. During the sermon, we will sing verses from that evocative Advent Hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” interspersed with the readings from scripture that inspired each of those verses. These O Antiphons or ’Refrains’ (also known as the Great Advent Antiphons or Great Os) are traditionally sung around the Magnificat at Vespers (Evening Prayer) on the last seven days of Advent. They likely date back to the sixth-century in Italy and became one of the key musical features of the days leading up to Christmas. The texts are best known to us now in their paraphrased form in the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” Based in scripture, they are really seven heart cries for Jesus to come anew in our life. Each one of them is preparing us to invite the Christ child more completely in this blessed season of Advent. You’ll find the old version of the verses in the middle of this pewsheet for ease of use and I want to thank our organists Kay and Kevin for obliging me today! – May you have a blessed Advent’
Random Notes CDXL
Bearing in mind that next year marks the bi-centenary of the building of the present Church of St, Mary, Carrigaline, it may perhaps be of some interest to readers of these notes to see the cover of the order of service that was prepared for the 150th anniversary service in 1974.
As previously mentioned, a service to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first service, is planned for the evening of Wednesday, 7th February, 2024, some fifty years later, to the day on which the service, for which this order of service was printed, was held. The preacher at the 2024 bi-centenary service will be the Most Revd John Mc Dowell, Archbishop of Armagh.
The cover of the 1974 order of service here illustrated, bears a set of the two stamps issued in 1968 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Cathedral of St. Mary, Limerick, date-stamped at the Post Office in Carrigaline on the day that the service was held, and bears the signatures of the participating clergy, and the organist, as follows:
Right Revd Richard Gordon Perdue, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross, 1957-1978,
Revd Basil Wolfe Mc Crea, Rector of Carrigaline, 1972-1990.
Very Revd. Charles William Wolfe, Dean of Cashel, 1961-1973.
Ven, Arthur Charles Gill, Rector of Templebreedy, 1949-1986, Archdeacon of Cloyne, 1968-1986.
