Hymns at St Mary’s
9 There’s a wideness in God’s mercy
455 Go forth for God
The last few Music Notes have been about interesting stories concerning organists from the newspaper archives. This week’s historical snippet comes from the Select Vestry Minute Book of St Peter’s church in North Main Street in Cork and concerns some problems which came to the attention of the Select Vestry. A Mr Orr was appointed as organist in September of 1874 having auditioned for the post along with Mr Howard in August. In 1881, the irritation of the Vestry was very clear when it was noted that:
…..it being only two months since Mr Orr got an advance on his salary, we consider his conduct most disgraceful in coming to the Church as Organist under the influence of drink and if ever it occurs again we will most certainly have him dismissed…
Mr Orr had resigned by September of that year and the Vestry were busy considering applications from eight organists for the post. After two rounds of auditions Mr Atkins was appointed – a member of the Atkins family associated with St Mary’s in Carrigaline. Mr Atkins proved to be very unco-operative about sharing the organ with anyone else. The Minutes note in 1882 that a letter of complaint had been received from Mr Atkins “complaining of Mr Swanton playing on the organ in his absence and asking the Vestry to prevent it.”
Mr Atkins resigned in 1883 and was replaced by Mrs Smith. No more turbulence in the organ loft after that – just saying!
