On the North wall, to the left of the monument to the Revd John Newman Lombard, in St. Mary’s Church, Carrigaline, is a handsome brass plate

by ‘O’ Connell, Cork’ set up in 1908 to the memory of Robert H. Hayes (c.1847-1907) J.P., of Bayview, nr. Carrigaline, a grandson of Thomas Hayes (d. 1817) of Crosshaven House, and Master of the South Union Hunt for four years from 1891, bearing the following an inscription as follows:

        ‘To the Glory of God

         and in loving memory

who died on June 10th 1907, aged 60 years

“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ

Erected by the Parishioners.’

Within the Vestry minute book are two entries relating to the above, the first dated 17th June, 1907,

Young form a sub-committee for the purpose of issuing a circular to the parishioners informing them of the unanimous wish of the Select Vestry to erect a mural tablet to the memory of the late R.H. Hayes & inviting subscriptions toward same.’

The second entry, dated ‘Easter Vestry, 20th April, 1908, gives a list a list of subscribers to the memorial, by then evidently in place.

‘The chairman submitted a list of subscribers to the ‘R.H. Hayes Memorial Fund which was as follows:
