Pew Sheet – 6th October 2024
The Revd Richard Dring writes ‘Our Diocesan Synod took place yesterday in Bandon Grammar school. This is an important annual event in the life of our Diocese. The Synod is in effect an AGM of our local Church and deals with matters concerning our Diocese and its governance. Synods within the Christian church have their origins in the formation of the early Church. In Acts Chapter 15 the details of the Council of Jerusalem can be found. This Council took place in AD 49-50 where the Disciples along with other key individuals in the early church debated whether Mosaic law applied to the gentiles. As we know the Council decided we did not have to follow Mosaic law. Our own Diocesan synod is concerned with the running of the Diocese through those we as members elect to the Diocesan Council, The Board of Education and other committees. We may think that this does not affect us as members of the parish seated here in Church today, but it does! We have an important input as we elect on a three cycle those who represent our parish at Synod. Those we elect then elect the members of many of the committees of our Diocese. The Diocesan Council is probably the most important as this is the group elected to be stewards of the finances and determine what the annual contribution from us all will be each year.
At Synod yesterday we review all the many aspects of the smooth running of our diocese for the previous year. While we may think we have no say, we do in the people we elect from our parish to serve on Synod for the three-year cycle.
Carrigaline Union has 5 elected representatives elected by us to represent our views and interests at the Diocesan Synod. This is where we have a voice! The representatives are: Helen Arnopp, Rowland Newenham, Lesley Roberts, Hilary Warren-Perry and Simon Woodworth who will represent us for Synods in 2023 to 2025. All serving clergy are expected to attend the annual Synod and should only be absent for exceptional reasons, the date of the meeting is set in advance so there is adequate notice. A book of reports summarising the work of the various committees is circulated to all synod members before the meeting.’
Peter Stobart will be running a Diocesan Come and Sing Evensong in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral on Saturday 19th October.
The rehearsal will be from 2pm and the service will be at 5pm with a break for tea at around 4.20pm. The music will include Stanford’s
Canticles in C (in this his anniversary year) and Charles Wood’s Never weather-beaten sail. Music will be provided on the day and singers of any ability are welcome. Please let him know directly at directorofmusicsfb@gmail.com if you plan to attend.

Mumps. Wrap the child in a Blanket. Take child to the pigsty. Rub child’s head on the pig’s back. The mumps will pass from child to pig.
